Jets -4

The Jets are coming into this game knowing that they did not play well in Japan against the Bucs, and will be playing hard. The quaterbacks rotation for the Jets is an advantage as even rookie Brooks Bollinger has been impressive so far in camp. There is some competition and depth on the o-line with veteran Brent Smith and rookie Dave Yovantis looking impressive. Dewayne Robertson will play longer than most starters, and the feeling is that there is good depth in the linebacking group.

That being said, it appears that the Bengals might be getting just a little too much respect here. Keep in mind that this is Marvin Lewis NFL coaching debut, and things always take time to round into shape for new coaches and new systems. The Bengals are still the Bengals and Lewis has made comments about the game not being important to win. In addition, everyone is on the Bengals, so taking the contrarian viewpoint I like the Jets in this spot.

Your theory may be right on in the regular season, but I don't think it matters one bit in the pre-season. Bill Cowher has coached the Steelers for how many years in a row now and Steve Mariucci won yesterday SU in his first game against him. Jacksonville and San Francisco are two other teams that won yesterday with a first year coach. In fact, correct if I am wrong, but Bill Parcells and the Cowgirls were the only team yesterday that failed to cover with a first year coach? Personally I think any new head coach wants to win in the preseason to prove a point and feel good about things. They say things like "the preseason is meaningless" just in case they get spanked a few times and people start grumbling. I have been looking for a few weeks now at finding some info on how first year coaches tend to do in the preseason.
